Join us in August for

CINDERELLA (La Cenerentola)

Opera Fairbanks is proud to be presenting

LA CENERENTOLA by Gioacchino Rossini

August 22 and 24, 2008 at the UAF Salisbury Theatre

Conducted by Gregory Buchalter, Opera Fairbanks Music Director and Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, La Cenerentola is based on the tale of Cinderella and the essence of the story remains. Much of the magical fantasy deleted--no fairy godmother, no pumpkins turned to coaches, and, instead of the glass slipper, a more realistic matching bracelet for the prince to identify the mysterious beauty for whom he has fallen.

But Cinderella still has a mean step-father (Don Magnifico) and two nasty, vain sisters. She is relegated to the position of disdained scullery maid while Don Magnifico fritters away her inheritance on finery for the vain sisters. Rossini and Ferretti turn it into satire, making Don Magnifico and the sisters into deliciously comic figures, while, at the same time retaining the romance and idealism suitable for a fable--the kind, forgiving Cinderella triumphs with grace and charm, not to speak of coloratura melodies to make a songbird envious. Gregory Buchalter Music Director For Opera Fairbanks

Fairbanks, Alaska – October 11, 2007.

Dynamic young conductor Gregory Buchalter, from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, has accepted the position of Music Director for Opera Fairbanks.  Maestro Buchalter joined the group’s advisory board in the fall of 2006.  For his debut performance with Opera Fairbanks he conducted the company’s concert “Fall in Love with Opera,” to great acclaim.

The conductor notes:  "This past August I made my first trip ever to Alaska to conduct with Opera Fairbanks. I was excited to work with members of the Fairbanks Symphony and other artists in addition to experiencing the wildlife and scenic beauty of Alaska. I had no idea that my experience would be as rewarding as it was to be.”

Maestro Buchalter auditioned numerous Alaskan singers, from which Opera Fairbanks ultimately cast nine singers who performed with orchestra.  Selections were included from La Boheme, Le Nozze di Figaro, Der Rosenkavalier, and L’Italiana in Algeri.

”I had decided that this concert should comprise of all Local Artists and I was amazed at the high level of talent and professionalism of the singers and instrumentalists. As if that weren't enough, the warmth and eagerness to help of all those that I was involved with was overwhelming.”

As Music Director for this energetic opera organization, Maestro Buchalter will provide his artistic and creative vision to repertoire, season selection, vocal and special guest recruitment, and community/state outreach.  The company anticipates that Maestro Buchalter will travel to Alaska as often as possible as part of his duties, which also include conducting at least one major production each season for the group.
